 Survival of the fittest vs. Survival of good enough

For most or all of our lives, we have been taught that for evolution to occur and traits to be passed down, those who contain those traits must be the fittest within their population to survive and pass down the traits. While I believe that this somewhat accurately describes what is true and actually happens, it does not consider what fittest means in an evolutionary sense, which does not mean what it means in the everyday world. Most people would describe the fittest as the fastest, strongest, and biggest while in the evolutionary sense it describes the ability to reproduce and pass down traits. 

This is why I believe that survival of the good enough is a more accurate description of natural selection. I believe this because while in some scenarios being the fastest or physically strongest might be the best way for you to pass down genes in most cases this is not the case. Many times, the "fittest" actually fit the description good enough. This can be shown in the case of a stronger male deer. If a stronger deer has a group of females in a group to mate with but gets, then has to defend against another strong deer, and the females are left alone. A sneaky deer could then come in and mate with some of the females. The deer that ended up reproducing with the group of female deer was not the "strongest" but was good enough at being sneaky that he passed down his traits.

  1. I adore the cute visuals you made for your post this week! Your deer example also did a good job illustrating the survival of the 'good enough'. Even if one deer is not the strongest and largest, if it is able to mate and produce viable offspring, then its traits will be passed down.

  2. The sneaky deer example is really fantastic. 'Sneakers' are a huge evolutionary force! Maybe in the future add a description of the visual you've created in addition to the description of a different (the deer) scenario. Good job! - Dr. W

  4. My understanding of this concept had come from my previous years of science. Thankfully , with evolution i have been able to reconstruct my understanding. beautiful blog illustrations.
